One of my favorite things to do in Des Moines is shop local boutiques and gift stores. I thought I would share my favorite local places I go for baby gifts! I am sure there are more than what I’m sharing here, so be sure to leave your favorites in the comments section too. One thing I love about shopping local, and especially the stores listed here, is that I can walk in and tell them who I’m shopping for, and they will help me shop for the perfect gift in my price range.
Posey & Jett’s
I met Becky, the owner of Posey and Jett’s in Altoona, in 2020 when she held an in-store “Baby Shower” for expecting moms in our area. She invited me to have a table and I loved chatting with expecting moms about birth and the first weeks home with baby. Her baby section is well-researched and stocked with the most practical (and trendy) items you could want for baby! My favorites are the super-soft swaddles and neat teethers. You can also shop online and I know they would be very helpful if you wanted to order ahead to pick up. Finally, you won’t meet anyone nicer than Becky. She knows her customers by name and goes out of her way to be helpful and kind to everyone! (Bonus–you can shop for everyone on your list at Posey & Jett’s!) They are located in the outlet mall in Altoona.
Suite Dreams
This store has a long-established reputation as the “go-to” spot for baby gifts and baby furniture in Des Moines. I know they will have unique and local items that you won’t find in big box stores. Be sure to check out their magnetic onesies and toy section too! You’ll find that perfect gift at Suite Dreams in Windsor Heights. Did you know they also have a Party Suite you can rent for baby showers and parties? It’s a really neat space designed with the expecting family in mind!
Learning Post
I’ve been shopping at the Learning Post for decades. First, as a school teacher (pre-doula days), then as a parent/aunt, and now as a doula trainer! Whether you’re shopping for developmental toys or books for baby, or something fun to keep baby’s big brother/sister busy, this is the store to visit. They have great wooden toys and interactive toys too for infants of all ages. I have recently been doing some online Christmas shopping here and they make it easy to quickly pick up my order!
Accents + Interiors
I discovered the baby gift area at Accents + Interiors in Urbandale by accident. I love shopping here for gifts (and for my own home decor) because they carry high-quality items in a variety of prices. Their baby items are beautiful and will definitely hold a special place in baby’s life. This is another store that is great at helping me shop and find the perfect item. They even include some nice tissue paper with purchases so gift wrapping is done too!
A You’re Adorable
One of the newest baby/children’s boutique shops is A You’re Adorable and is a short drive away in Adel. I met the owner of this store at an event this fall and she’s spent a lot of time research the best baby items on the market! She found the perfect fit of practical and specialty items! Be sure to check out their swaddle blankets–they’re my favorite style.
