When you hire a birth doula, you are inviting someone into one of the most important and vulnerable days of your life. You want someone who can help you feel calm, supported, and prepared when labor does not go exactly as expected.
At The Iowa Baby Ladies, we believe one of the biggest benefits of working with an experienced doula team is that you are not getting the perspective of just one person. You are benefiting from years of shared experience, different ideas, and a team of doulas who support one another behind the scenes.
That means more comfort, more options, and more resources for you during labor.
1. We Have A Large Toolbox Of Comfort Measures
Every labor is different. What helps one parent cope beautifully may not work at all for someone else.
Over the years, we have collected a wide variety of comfort measures, positioning ideas, movement techniques, partner support strategies, and practical tools that we can draw from during your birth. Some of our doulas have studied skills like Spinning Babies, while others have studied Gilligan’s Guide or Body Ready Method.
If you are dealing with back labor, a long induction, fatigue, an epidural, or a baby who seems to be taking their time moving down, we can offer different ideas to try. If your doula is unsure of what to offer next, she can always reach out and get some additional perspective from our team.
2. We Know That Different Hospitals Work Differently
If this is your first baby, you may not realize how much hospital policies and routines can vary. For example, policies at UnityPoint Health hospitals may differ from policies at MercyOne. Even within the same health system, routines can sometimes vary by location, unit, provider, or clinical situation.
Because we have supported hundreds of families in many different hospitals over the years, we are familiar with many of those differences. That experience can help you feel more prepared before you ever walk through the hospital doors.
We can help you think through questions you may want to ask, understand what options may be available, and feel more comfortable navigating an unfamiliar environment.
3. We Know How To Work Well With Your Medical Team
Your medical team plays an important role in your care, and we want to work collaboratively with them. Over the years, we have worked alongside many nurses, OBs, family physicians, midwives, anesthesiologists, and other hospital professionals. That experience helps us understand how to communicate respectfully and effectively while keeping you at the center of your birth.
We may help you think of a question you want to ask. We may help you process information you have just received. We may suggest a new position and work with your nurse to help you get there safely.
When everyone in the room is working together, you are more likely to feel supported rather than pulled in different directions.
4. We Have Seen Many Common Labor Challenges
When you are in labor, something unexpected can feel huge because it is happening to you for the first time. For us, it may be something we have seen before. We have supported parents through long inductions, back labor, slow progress, babies in less-than-ideal positions, epidurals, prolonged pushing, exhaustion, unexpected changes in birth plans, and many other common labor challenges.
Every birth is unique, but experience gives us perspective. Instead of having only one idea to offer, we often have several. That means you may have more choices for how to get comfortable, how to move, how to cope, or what questions to ask next.
5. Your Doula Has Our Entire Team Behind Her
This is one of the things we love most about our agency model!
Our Iowa Baby Ladies doulas have a private team group chat. If your doula is at your birth and wants another idea, she can reach out to the rest of us. She may ask for another positioning suggestion. She may want ideas for supporting you with an epidural. She may want another perspective on helping your partner become more involved. She may simply want to brainstorm with doulas who have supported similar situations before.
That means you are not relying only on the experience of the doula standing beside you, you are benefiting from the collective experience of our team.
Some of our doulas have many years of experience, and newer doulas have access to that knowledge too. For you, that can mean more ideas, more perspective, and more options during your birth.
6. Experience Helps Us Stay Calm When Plans Change
Birth can be unpredictable. You can prepare carefully, take classes, make a birth plan, and still have labor unfold in a way you did not expect. In those moments, having someone calm beside you can make a big difference.
Experience has taught us how to slow things down, look at what is happening, and help you focus on the choices in front of you. We do not make medical decisions for you, and we do not tell you what choice to make.
We help you ask questions, understand your options, communicate with your medical team, and feel supported as you decide what feels right for you and your baby.
At The Iowa Baby Ladies, experience is not just about how many births one doula has attended. It is about what we have learned together over the years.
It is the hospital knowledge we share. The relationships we have built. The positioning ideas we have collected. The difficult labors we have learned from. The questions we know to ask. And the ability to reach out to one another when another perspective could help.
Our goal is simple. We want you to feel more comfortable, more supported, and more aware of your options throughout your birth.
When you hire one of our doulas, you have one doula beside you, but you also have the experience of an entire team behind her.
If you do not yet have a birth doula or postpartum doula, and you live in Iowa, we would love to chat more about how amazing doula support can be for expecting and new parents! Feel free to send me an email to Katie@theiowababylady.com.
