What is a Postpartum Doula?
A Postpartum Doula works with families in the first weeks/months after birth offering support, information, instruction, comfort, and resources as needed. Postpartum Doulas support the mother’s recovery, give instruction on infant care and feedings, and assist with household organization. (From CAPPA.net)
Basically, a Postpartum Doula is someone who knows a lot about post-birth recovery, newborns, and how hard those first weeks can be—and is there to support you as you find your confidence as a parent—whether it’s your first baby or not!
What are the benefits of postpartum support?
- Post-Birth Recovery: Postpartum Doulas help ensure the new parent(s) are taken care of in the first weeks after birth by providing meals, offering an opportunity for a nap, and answering questions about recovery.
- Mental Health: With support, new mothers (and their partners) decrease their risk for postpartum depression and other postpartum mental health disorders.
- Lactation Help: Many postpartum doulas are ready to help in those first weeks with issues that may come up, or they can refer you to local support options too.
- New Baby Support: Doulas have extensive training to know how to help babies thrive in their first months. Whether it’s helping them sleep better or get those stubborn burps out, doulas are the experts in baby care and want to help you understand what your baby is trying to communicate.
- Sibling Support: The big brothers and sisters need help too! Doulas help by suggesting ways to support the siblings during this transition or include them in activities so parents can focus on their newborn for a bit.
- Household Organization: Doulas provide an extra set of hands to prepare snacks, get a meal ready, or fold some baby laundry too. While they are not house cleaners, doulas can help a family get their home organized for infant feedings, diapering areas, and more!
