One of my favorite self-care practices during my pregnancies was getting prenatal massages as often as I could. I was in a really stressful job during my second pregnancy. (I was teaching 5th graders and not a doula yet.) I visited a few different massage therapists. All of my sessions gave my body and mind a chance to relax and spend some positive, intentional time together with my baby. (I also enjoyed my time with Abby Miller at Des Moines Acupuncture for the same reasons!)
Physical Comfort
Prenatal massage therapists are prepared to support you and your changing body. They have special tables and pillows ready to make you comfortable. This type of bodywork also helps stretch your ligaments from the elastin changes in your body. Many mothers will visit LMTs to help balance their body during the third trimester as a way to help baby be in an ideal position prior to labor starting.
Before you book your first session, call ahead and find out what experience they have with pregnant mothers. What equipment do they have? Will you be on your side, back, or belly with special supports? One extra tip–be sure you are well hydrated before and after your appointment!

Emotional Comfort
Besides being really good for my body, I was very mindful to really focus on my growing baby during each massage. I made it a point to really connect with my baby, think about what he might look like, imagine those quiet winter nights we’d spend awake and breastfeeding, and just focus on all of the positive things that were to come in our mother/baby journey together.
Everyone needs the time and space to disconnect from the day-to-day stress and these were a great addition to my prenatal health.
