I am thankful to be married to a chiropractor. One of my favorite routines each week during my pregnancies was going to his office and laying facedown on his pregnancy table to take a short nap. It felt SO good to have my ligaments relaxed and stretched! (Plus it kept my sciatic pain away!)
Pregnancy is a time of incredible physical and hormonal changes. As the uterus expands and hormones shift, the body adapts in ways that can lead to discomfort, imbalance, and strain. That’s where bodywork—like massage therapy, physical therapy, and chiropractic care—can make a powerful difference.
Recent studies highlight how prenatal massage reduces anxiety, improves sleep, and even lowers the risk of birth complications. A 2024 study found that classical foot massage significantly eased insomnia and anxiety in preeclamptic pregnant women. Another randomized trial showed that massage during labor reduced pain and anxiety at key stages of cervical dilation1.
Physical therapy offers targeted support for pelvic alignment, core stability, and muscle imbalances. Therapists trained in prenatal care can help address diastasis recti, sciatica, and postural shifts that affect gait and comfort. Chiropractic care, especially the Webster Technique, focuses on body balancing—aligning the pelvis and supporting optimal fetal positioning. This technique also addresses ligament tension, particularly in the round and uterosacral ligaments, which can influence uterine shape and mobility.
Hormonal changes during pregnancy, especially the release of relaxin, soften ligaments to prepare for birth. While necessary, this can lead to joint instability. Bodywork helps stabilize these areas by easing muscle tension and improving proprioception. Massage, for example, has been shown to reduce swelling and sciatic nerve pain by improving circulation and releasing tight muscles3.
When integrated into prenatal care, bodywork supports not just physical comfort but emotional well-being. It’s a proactive way to honor the body’s wisdom, reduce stress, and prepare for birth with greater ease. Whether it’s a gentle massage, a pelvic floor session, or a chiropractic adjustment, these modalities offer more than relief—they offer resilience.
