Postpartum Doula Support
What Is a Postpartum Doula?
A Postpartum Doula is a trained professional that offers physical, emotional, and spiritual support to a new mother and the rest of the family. Postpartum Doulas also offer breastfeeding support, light household organization, family nurturing and instruction to mom and/or other family members in the care of a newborn. The Postpartum Doula’s job is to make the transition to parenthood easier for new parents, to help mom during her recovery period and to ascertain what the family needs help with and provide the instruction.
The main objective of the Postpartum Doula’s role is not to take over complete care of the newborn, but to educate and support the family so that they will feel empowered to care for their newborn themselves. Postpartum Doulas do NOT offer any medical advice or perform any medical or clinical procedures, but instead can offer parents referrals to appropriate studies and published books. Postpartum doulas are good with children, patient, non-judgmental, and knowledgeable about newborn care and breastfeeding.

“Katie was more supportive than ever imagined. When breastfeeding became a challenge for me and my son, she offered her services and knowledge. Her kind words are just what a new mom needs to hear – she speaks to mothers in a mother’s voice and not in a ‘doctor-voice’. She also spent time with my other child to help her understand what it meant to be a big sister. I thought I had prepared her with not only new toys and books, but also a lot of information, but she still needed someone to spend quality time with her and Katie did just that – a service I never imagined would be the case from my doula. Lastly, Katie spent time listening. So many people wanted to offer their words of wisdom after both my children were born. While I appreciated most of what family and friends said, it is was so nice to have someone to sit down with me and listen to how I and my body were feeling. Hiring Katie as a doula was the best choice for me and my family – I would do it again without question!”
“With my first, I got by OK with just me and baby. I could sleep when baby was sleeping, and I’d done great postpartum food prep!
But with my second, with a toddler adjusting to this big change, it was a huge help with the transition for him to have someone able to give him their undivided attention, play down on the floor doing puzzles and whatnot, and include him in helping with things like washing fruits and veggies (and then playing with water at the sink while she cut up produce)!
Emotionally, it was a huge help to be able to talk through what I was feeling- to have someone who wasn’t a friend or family member asking me honestly about how I was doing. I felt like I didn’t need to maintain any semblance of ‘I’ve got this’ and could be real and vulnerable about what was going on in those early, raw weeks.
She’s the reason I could manage a shower on those days of constant, endless neediness. I answered the door in yesterday’s clothes, feeling gross and disheveled, and could lock myself into the bathroom and shower, wash my face, pluck stray eyebrow hairs, and know my babies were just fine. She told me I was beautiful at 3 weeks postpartum. She reminded me that my body needed me to rest and recover and it was ok to just sit and enjoy my sleeping baby and let her work and entertain my toddler. She made it feel OK to make the choices that would let my healing body recover. I could go on.”
