Labor Doula Training in Troy, Michigan

April 5-6, 2024 from 8:30am-6:30pm each day

1. Eligibility

This is your first step in becoming a labor doula! No prior experience or training necessary.

The intention of this state-sponsored doula training is to support the Doula Initiative that started January 1, 2023 in Michigan and is continuing to grow in 2024!

If you want to be inspired and empowered to begin your doula career, train with the Childbirth and Postpartum Professionals Association, an international certification organization for Doulas, Childbirth Educators, and Lactation Educators.  CAPPA trainings are designed to educate and equip the contemporary perinatal professional for a successful career in a fun, supportive, and collaborative environment.  Trainings are evidence-based, comprehensive, and are designed to appeal to all learning styles.

Who is eligible?

  • Must at least 18 years old.
  • Must be a Michigan resident.
  • Must intend on becoming a professional doula.
  • Must intend to provide doula services to Medicaid families in Michigan.
  • Must intend to apply to the MDHHS Doula Registry, which is the first step in becoming a Medicaid provider. Details and Application can be found here.
  • Has not already completed birth doula training

2. Training Details

April 5-6, 2024 from 8:30am-6:30pm EST

Troy, Michigan

This two-day class is designed to provide a foundational skill base, knowledge, and perspectives on professional labor support for perinatal professionals. The CAPPA Labor Doula Training Class includes the CAPPA Labor Doula Manual, and covers the following topics:

  • CAPPA certification and policies
  • Practical application of Scope of Practice, ethics, and integrity
  • Building bridges with medical/midwifery professionals
  • Modeling and teaching positive communication and self-advocacy
  • Support for every stage of labor and birth
  • Hands on practice of proven comfort measures and labor support techniques
  • Emotional support for labor and birth, as well as unexpected events
  • Hospital procedures – risk/benefit as well as alternatives and support
  • Cesarean and VBAC support
  • Prenatal and postpartum consultations and support
  • Breast/chest feeding initiation and support
  • Business development, marketing, and networking to create a successful career
  • And much more!

A note on certification: If you desire to become a Certified Labor Doula (CLD), this class fulfills the training requirement pre-requisite. The next step would be to enroll in CAPPA Academy after your training to get started on additional requirements. Those requirements can be found at www.cappa.net under the Labor Doula Traditional option.

3. Scholarship Application

This training is being offered on a scholarship-only basis to new doulas looking to provide support to families who are Medicaid beneficiaries.

In addition to the perks mentioned above, this training also includes:

  • Full Tuition ($610 value)
  • Daily stipend to attend this 18-hour training ($20/hour) *Note: 100% attendance is required.
  • Reimbursement for two nights in hotel ($140/night) for those traveling more than 60 miles
  • Breakfasts, lunches, & snacks during the training days

Things to consider before applying:

  • Doulas will be on call 24/7 if they have a client due. Typically, doulas will be on call two weeks before and two weeks after the estimated due date.
  • Avoid travel or traveling further from home when on call.
  • Leave in the middle and/or miss social functions, movies, and family time.
  • Function on very little sleep and/or get up in the middle of the night.
  • Forego a planned work schedule.
  • Work 24 hours or more at a birth.
  • Get calls from clients at all hours.
  • Arrange on-call childcare for small children.
  • Michigan Medicaid reimburses up to $1,150 per client ($75 each for up to 6 prenatal or postpartum visits, and $700 for the birth).
  • Most doulas are self-employed and will do the Medicaid billing themselves. This training includes "Business Start Up" information.
